Manchester City had earlier gone four points clear at the top of the Premier League standings with a convincing 4-0 away win at the expense of Newcastle United who are struggling at the bottom of the Premier League table. Newcastle United are one of the three teams in the Premier League relegation zone alongside Burnley and Norwich City. The Magpies are second from bottom with ten points and they have the same points tally as Norwich City who are at the bottom of the Premier League table.

Premier League holders Manchester City scored two goals in each half to secure a big win over the Magpies. The Portuguese duo of Ruben Dias and Joao Cancelo scored in the first half, while RiyadMahrez and England attacker Raheem Sterling added goals in the second half to ensure that the Citizens sealed a comprehensive victory over Newcastle United.

Liverpool could not beat Tottenham Hotspur away from home to move back within one point of Manchester City. The Citizens were the first team in action of the top two teams and they took advantage by extending their lead at the summit. Liverpool could only reduce the deficit to three points after the 2-2 draw with Spurs.

The draw with Tottenham Hotspur put an end to the eight-match winning run for Liverpool in all competitions. The Reds had won six league matches and two Champions League matches before the Spurs game.

After 18 league games, Manchester City have 44 points, while Liverpool have 41 points.
